On My Way to Spread Some Gay
Howdy and yeehaw to the to possible world explorers reading this blog. Unfortunately, conquering people around the world and forcing them to believe what you do isn't in style anymore. Luckily, in this day and age, people are often told that they are allowed to be who they are and do what they want to express themselves. Which seems like totally cool right?
Yeah, it's not as cool as it's made out to be. Because even though young people everywhere are told that they can be whoever they want, there are still deeply rooted stereotypes in our society placed there by you guessed it, the explorers who decided to control the world. There has been some progress made since then, such as women can actually support themselves now, and gay people are allowed to finally get married. Yet, there are still many ways that our society falls short, because of the ideals and morals that our conquering fathers installed in this country. Minorities, such as people of color and LGBT identifying people are discriminated against by many people who are high level ignorant. This obviously halts people from being who they are, and "Go ahead and tell me none of this is supposed to hurt me very much" (Alexie 68). Our country claims acceptance for all and yet the very people who founded it were discriminatory and close-minded. How can a country be inherently hypocritical and continue on the way that it is? If those explorers or conquers or whatever you chose to call them had just stayed in their own country and didn't go around messing up other places, maybe there would be a civilized society where there are no terms and conditions for acceptance.

I love your commentary on society's hypocrisy when it comes to true freedom and acceptance! To what extent do you think these harmful stereotypes affect individuals, and has this discrimination really improved over the last century or so?
ReplyDeleteHow wonderfully gay, Megan, I am truly impressed. I loved how you were able to identify a gap in the "accepting" society that much of America boasts about. It would be great to hear more about how early historical events still influence the LGBT community as a whole.
