Humans thrive in groups that are similar to them. We are naturally social creatures, and we feel out of place when we are alone, yet still in a group. Our country is a  melting pot  full of people who are of different races, sexualities, genders, and so much more. However, over the course of human history, some groups have decided they are superior to others.  Even though America claims to be open to all, it, in fact, betrays many of its citizens. When it comes to issues that involve foreign nations, such as wars, immigration issues, etc, citizens of marginalized groups always take the fall. There is "no trial, and no due process" ( Takei ) people are simply caught up as "soldiers ordered us out of our home" (Takei). This leads to the discussion about nationalism vs patriotism. Don't draw attention to yourself. Keep your head down. Your opinion is only for inside your head. Search for the closest exit for when something goes wrong. Be careful who you make friends with. Never entirely let your guard down. You must constantly watch your back. Dress how you should. Act how they expect you to. Stay away from the things they tell you to. Feel trapped inside your own skin. The people who you thought cared turn on you. Accusations fly between people. People begin to stare as you walk past. You shrink into yourself. Self-confidence plummets. invitations no longer appear with your name on them. More time is spent inside your own house, feeling confined. Isolate yourself from everyone. One person gives a helping hand. Pushes away some of the growing darkness in your heart. There is finally somebody to walk next to. A reason to leave the house. But you must watch your back still.
