The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave

Humans thrive in groups that are similar to them. We are naturally social creatures, and we feel out of place when we are alone, yet still in a group. Our country is a melting pot full of people who are of different races, sexualities, genders, and so much more. However, over the course of human history, some groups have decided they are superior to others.  Even though America claims to be open to all, it, in fact, betrays many of its citizens. When it comes to issues that involve foreign nations, such as wars, immigration issues, etc, citizens of marginalized groups always take the fall. There is "no trial, and no due process" (Takei) people are simply caught up as "soldiers ordered us out of our home" (Takei).

This leads to the discussion about nationalism vs patriotism.

Nationalism can be defined as saying your country is perfect, or the only thing that matters is that you are American. On the flip side, patriotism is being proud of the ideals that founded our nation. Our hard work, determination, and resilience, among other things. Often times, like a girl growing out her dyed hair, we must go back to our roots. Focus on the concept that all men (and women) are created equal. No matter what. As people, we often do not look back on the progress we have made, even though we should. We evolve and change over time and in order to keep ourselves humble, we need to look back on the past to become better people in the future.
