Just me, myself, and I
Don't draw attention to yourself. Keep your head down. Your opinion is only for inside your head. Search for the closest exit for when something goes wrong. Be careful who you make friends with. Never entirely let your guard down. You must constantly watch your back. Dress how you should. Act how they expect you to. Stay away from the things they tell you to.
Feel trapped inside your own skin.
The people who you thought cared turn on you. Accusations fly between people. People begin to stare as you walk past. You shrink into yourself. Self-confidence plummets. invitations no longer appear with your name on them. More time is spent inside your own house, feeling confined.
Isolate yourself from everyone.
One person gives a helping hand. Pushes away some of the growing darkness in your heart. There is finally somebody to walk next to. A reason to leave the house. But you must watch your back still. Because one ally in a world of enemies is not enough.
Eventually, they become outcasted too.
They realized their mistake. You are a plague on your surroundings. At least that is what the voices in your head tell you. You are not like them and you never will be. Your name is tainted forever. The looks of disdain never leave their faces. You see your old ally. They turn their head before you can make eye contact. It kills you inside to stay silent.
You become "envy of the miserable toward the happy" (Miller 137).
You attempt to speak out. It is not fair that you have to live this life of lies for the comfort of others. Why do they deserve to sleep at night while you toss and turn, wondering why you had to endure this.
Any attempt to speak out is shut down. You no longer have any voice. The accusations seemed like forever ago and yet at the same time only yesterday.
Nobody can lead this painful of a life.
Loneliness and darkness become your best friends. The stares have stopped, only because you never go outside. More rumors begin to circulate about you. The original reason why you are the way that you are now is lost to not only yourself but also the people who made you like this.
You finally accept that there is nobody coming to save you.

I think the short sentences are very powerful. Why do you think it is so hard for people to accept those that are slightly different than the others?
ReplyDeleteThank you, and I think it might be because of the fact that people want everything to be uniform and not have to deal with people who are unlike them because it can be very hard to understand other's point of view at times.
DeleteI think this is a super powerful piece. However, I think many people "suffer" from this, and the reason for isolation from the community is because it's an uncomfortable/taboo topic to talk about. Why do you think that is, and why do you think people choose to take the "easy way out" when compiling evidence?
ReplyDeleteThanks, and yes I agree that many people could possibly as you said "suffer" from this because of the fact that a majority of people don't want to make the effort in order to see another's point of view. Along those same lines is the the idea that when there is somebody different, they are outcast because there is a misunderstanding about who they are.
